California is not a tax-free state. It is also the highest-volume FBA prep state in the US. The Inland Empire (Riverside / San Bernardino counties) is the densest Amazon FC cluster in the country: LGB, ONT, LAX, SCK, SBD codes all sit within an hour's drive. Picking a Los Angeles or Inland Empire prep center is the default move for sellers serving West Coast demand at any meaningful volume.
California prep centers absorb the trade-off of state sales tax in exchange for radically lower per-unit shipping costs into the densest FC corridor in North America. For high-velocity SKUs, the math typically favors California-then-FBA over any tax-free state.
Where the prep actually sits.
The LA metro is dominant. Vernon, Eastvale, Moreno Valley, Rialto, Chino, and Redlands all host multiple FBA prep operators. The Inland Empire (roughly an hour east of downtown LA) concentrates the largest operators because of proximity to the LGB and ONT FC clusters plus cheaper warehouse rent than coastal LA. The Bay Area (around the Port of Oakland) is a secondary cluster, smaller, more expensive, and typically used by sellers with European or Asian import volume.
What sellers miss.
California state sales tax is 7.25% with local district taxes commonly bringing the rate to 9% or higher. Storing inventory in California creates physical nexus, but marketplace facilitator laws shift collection to Amazon in most cases. California also has aggressive labor and employment regulations that flow through to prep-center pricing. Expect higher per-unit rates than comparable Oregon or Texas operators. Confirm with your CPA whether the savings on FC proximity clear the additional state tax exposure.
