Is 'near me' the right filter for an FBA prep center?

Usually not. The three filters that actually matter are: turnaround time at the prep center, distance from the prep center to the right Amazon fulfillment center (drives Inbound Placement Service Fees), and Q4 capacity. A center 2,000 miles away with a 24-hour turnaround and capacity for your Q4 volume beats one 30 miles away with a 5-day backlog.

How does Amazon's Inbound Placement Service Fee (IPSF) change the calculus?

IPSF charges sellers when their inbound shipments need redistribution across Amazon FCs. A prep center near East Coast Amazon FCs reduces IPSF for East Coast demand. A West Coast center reduces it for West Coast demand. For standard-size at the Minimal placement option, IPSF runs roughly $0.20 to $0.45 per unit.
